1.      History and use

 

Native to the Gulf of Mexico, Baja California, the West Indies and Namibia, the damiana is grown extensively by sowing in the spring, in a hot, humid climate, and leaves are harvested in the summer, when flowering occurs.

 

2.      Description of the plant

 

Damiana was used as an aphrodisiac by the Mayans of Central America, and even today it is recognized as a virtue, while also considered as an excellent tonic, indicated in cases of mild depression. The leaves are used to flavor liqueurs and, in Mexico, as a substitute for tea.

  • Tonic

 

Damiana is a restorative tonic of the nervous system, it has always been considered an aphrodisiac and its stimulating action is due to the presence of thymol, an antiseptic and tonic component.

 

  • Antidepressant

 

Damiana has a stimulating action on the body and mind and is recommended for people suffering from mild depression or nervous fatigue and its stimulating properties are appreciated when, at the time of depression, associate with the phenomena of anxiety, especially after a prolonged period of stress.

 

  • Sexual stimulant
